Physical Fitness Information to Parents

Dear Families,

During the month of March, our students in 7th grade will participate in the California Physical Fitness Test (PFT). The FITNESSGRAM[1]is the required annual PFT for students in grades five, seven, and nine in California public schools. This health-related fitness test is intended to help students acquire lasting habits of regular physical activity. At Bowditch, all 6th and 8th grade students also participate in the fitness testing. However, the results do not get submitted to the State.

One of the components of the PFT is to measure body composition. For this mandated calculation, height/weight is measured as part of one’s body mass index. All members of the Physical Education department take measures to ensure students' privacy in the weighing process. Students are weighed individually and results are kept in teachers' records where students cannot access.

We are asking families to have a conversation with your student about confidentiality. One’s weight, in particular, should be considered private information and not subject to conversations. The Physical Education staff repeatedly talks with students about confidentiality, however, we need your help in reminding your student about the sensitivity around this data.

For more information about the PFT, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s teacher.
